Where did you growup? I grew up in the Bayou Country of Louisiana in a town called Lake Charles. The area was heavily French and I didn’t learn English until I started first grade, although my dad and last name – Romero, were Spanish. My French comes back to me when I visit my family there today.
What brought you to Cincinnati? I had worked in several governmental agencies during WWII and had made friends all over the country. When the war ended my job ended and I was traveling to visit some of my friends. Two lived in Cincinnati. When these friends learned that I was going on to Texas to work as a model, they encouraged me to seek modeling jobs in Cincinnati. I did. Later I met my husband, Len, here and we were married in 1947. How did you come to attend Mariemont Church? Len and I had been living in Madison Place. In order to move in the townhouses in Mariemont, which was very desirable housing, you had to have children. We couldn’t get on the waiting list until I was pregnant and then we had to wait for two years for one to be available. One of my new neighbors encouraged me to take my daughter to Sunday School and I did. I have been here ever since. Tell us about your craft work. I have always liked the arts and took dance classes with my daughters when they were young. Because I had three girls, I started to sew and I loved it. I made all of their clothes and my curtains and draperies. I even made each of the girl’s wedding dresses, each one with lace that I had bought in Europe or Canada. Once the girls were grown, I needed a new passion. I found it in stained glass. | Editor’s note: Dell made for her church family the beautiful stained glass crosses in the Parish Center auditorium and lounge. One is pictured above. | I like to take something that I have seen and then draw a pattern to create it in glass and I always have a particular scripture in mind with each piece. The last one I did was the descending Holy Spirit and my scripture was from Psalm 121. Creating beauty with glass makes me feel close to the Lord. I never dreamed that I would do something like this, especially since I started with it so late in my life. I have three daughters, Colette, Denise, and Camille, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
