The Actuarial Society of South Africa and the Medical Research Council report the following:

— 5.4 of 48 million people in South Africa are infected, that's 11% of total population
—950 people die daily. [Imagine that the entire population of Cincinnati will die this year.1]
—1,400 people are infected daily, that's more than half a million new infections each year
—Life expectancy in South Africa has dropped from age 63 in 1990 to only 51 in 2006

Pray for an end to the Aids crisis.  For other ways you can help, contact Zeke Swift of the South Africa HIV and AIDS Collaboration.

More Information
  • Some 39.5 million people are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. 2.9 million have died this year from AIDS-related disease.
  • 4.3 million have been infected.
  • Young people between 15 and 24 account for 40% of new infections world-wide.
  • 1,500 children become infected with HIV each day, mostly newborns.
  • Currently, 63% of the world's infected people live in sub-Saharan Africa, but the virus is spreading fastest in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (70% increase in new infections in the past 2 years.)

According to Ravi Zacharias, “If the church of Jesus Christ rises to the challenge of HIV/AIDS, it will be the greatest apologetic the world has ever seen.”

or the smaller, text-only version here.

But where do we start? Where the people of God always start in times of crisis—with prayer. Look for the 31 Day Prayer Guide insert in Sunday's bulletin.  For the month of December ... and beyond...join many around the world making these brief, substantive petitions to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS.

For more information on MCC's response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, see Zeke Swift or Susan Carson.

1
2000 US Census reports the official population of Cincinnati to be 331,285. Approximately, 346,750 South Africans die annually from Aids.
