Forgiveness that Restores Matthew 18:23-35
Introduction - The fourth of Jesus' discourses is often called the Community Prescription. Jesus shows that the three main enemies of community are competition, independence, and retribution. The Messiah's antidotes are humility, accountability and forgiveness.
Forgiveness - 12 words that changed the world
Today's Main Idea: Forgiveness was born in the heart of God and is central to His Kingdom! Knowing it, receiving it, living it and giving it is the call of every Christ follower, and the key to establishing a truly redeemed community.
1. Forgiveness does not originate with man; it comes from the heart of God (23-27)
2. Unforgiveness is an enemy foothold that imprisons and destroys the human heart (28-30)
3. Godly forgiveness is immediate, wholehearted, and repetitious. (31-35, 21-22)

Study questions for next week (Chapters 23-25)
1. Following two chapters of consistent opposition, Jesus denounces the religious elite in Chapter 23. Which of the seven woes do you find yourself doing to others?
2. Chapters 24-25 shift from the Temple area to the Mount of Olives, the site of Jesus' fifth discourse, which for this reason is called the Olivet Discourse. Here Jesus talks about the end-times. He predicts a time of great upheaval - list the signs of the end.
3. From 24:36 onward, Jesus focuses on being ready. Looking at the last month, when have you been ready? When have you not been ready? Why are you not ready? Are there any patterns in your life that this passage inspires you to address?
4. What do you think is the main point of the parable of the talents (25:14-30)?
5. The last parable (25:31-46) talks about the final judgment. How do you think that would go for you if it happened today? |
